Promoting economic development

The Southern Province has a motto “Dukorane umurava, dutere imbere " which incite the Southern Province population to be couregeous in work towards development. To achieve development, priority was given to the following actions:

Agriculture and Breeding

  • Developing marshlands and encouraging the population to cultivate rice, maize and manioc;
  • Increasing the quality and the production of by products of coffee and tea
  • Distributing selected seeds
  • Striving to find communal activities requiring a great deal of workforce so as to provide work for many people
  • To breed the cattle in cowsheds, at least a modern cow per family
  • To rear the small cattle which is productive
  • To participate in activities of fighting against erosion by the construction of terraces

After the analysis done in Southern Province regarding the soil and the climate, they are crops identified which should cultivated in consolidated way. Those crops are:

Food crops

- Cassava

The crop of cassava was chosen to be cultivated in Districts of Ruhango, Muhanga, Nyanza, Huye, Gisagara and Kamonyi.

Here is the progress of the increasing the cultivated area of cassava.

-  Maize

The crop of maize was chosen to be cultivated in all Districts of the Southern Province

Remarque: in year 2011 they have been a reduction of area cultivated due to the lack of rain

- Rice

The crop of rice was chosen to be cultivated in Districts of Ruhango, Muhanga, Nyanza, Huye, Gisagara and Kamonyi.

- Wheat ;

The crop of wheat was chosen to be cultivated in Districts of Nyaruguru and Nyamagabe

- Irish potatoes;

The crop of wheat was chosen to be cultivated in Districts of Nyaruguru , Nyamagabe and Muhanga
