CELEBRATION OF THE WEEK OF FIGHTING AGAINST DRUGS

Nyanza February 14th 2011

Like in all the Districts of the country, the residents of Muhanga District celebrated the week that was designated to fight against drugs; a week that started on February 5th – 12th, 2011 at the regional stadium of this District and the theme was “LET US ALL FIGHT AGAINST THE DISSEMINATION AND THE USE OF DRUGS AMONG THE YOUTH, HAVE A GOOD LIFE, SECURITY AND DEVELOPMENT”

This Saturday February 12th, 2011 at the regional stadium of Muhanga District took place the celebration of the week of fighting against drugs.

These ceremonies that were opened by a parade of different residents of Muhanga District mostly the young boys and girls from different secondary schools based in this District such as: St Joseph secondary school, Shyogwe secondary school, St Marie Reine secondary school and this parade started from the District office heading to the regional stadium.

In his opening speech, the Executive Secretary of Nyamabuye Sector in Muhanga District Mr. Jean Baptist MUGUNGA welcomed and thank all the participants in these ceremonies and he reminded the youth that they are the hope and future of our country. So, they do not have to destroy their life.

The Police Commander in Muhanga District Mr. Victor VANDAMA explained in depth the concept “Drug” and he said: “The drugs are foods, drinks or any other thing that is injected in the body and cause the consumer to change negatively the attitude and are accompanied by serious consequences that can even lead to death.

To continue his speech, Mr. Victor highlighted the consequences of using the drugs and he said that in our country, 25% of people having mental challenges is because of drugs.

Concerning the preventive measures, Mr. Victor said that the law punishes seriously whoever will be caught selling or using drugs.

In his speech, the Executive Secretary of Muhanga District Mr. Celce GASANA thank the residents of this District for their efforts and zeal in fighting against the consumption and dissemination of drugs. He also explained the background of this week and the importance of the eradication of drugs on people’s life.

Mr. GASANA said that this week started in Shyogwe Sector because it is where most of drugs makers and distributors are based and it was concluded in Nyamabuye which is also the urban Sector of Muhanga District because it accommodates different people form different corners of the country including the users and sellers of drugs.

Still in his speech, Mr. GASANA said “WE DON’T NEED DRUGS EITHER IN MUHANAGA DISTRICT OR ELSEWHERE IN OUR COUNTRY, BYE, BYE DRUGS, WE DON’T NEED THEM, WE SHALL NOT USE THEM ANYMORE.”

Mr. GASANA kept asking the population of Muhanga District in general and the youth in particular to adopt good attitudes, to be characterized by the culture of integrity, to be exemplary and the model and preserve our culture.

He also reminded that the struggle against drugs is not ended but it starts as every body must make sure that there are no more drugs in Muhanga District and all over the country. “So, more efforts are required in the eradication of drugs.”
