Nyaruguru District is situated in the South of Southern Province. It shares the border with Nyamagabe District district in the North West.
To the North, it has a common border with Huye District. To the East there is Gisagara District.
To the South, Nyaruguru District joins onto Burundi. With the new administrative basic structure, the District is made up of 14 sectors, 72 cells. The District has a population of about 250.000 inhabitants on an area of 2.750 km ².
The District’s economy relies on agriculture and animal husbandry for 98 %. Agriculture and animal husbandry are practised according to traditional methods, and the production remains poor and the population fails to be self-sufficient and to produce a surplus for the market. They grow industrial crops such as coffee and tea, and even subsistence crops such as wheat, potato, sorghum, bean, vegetables and fruits.
Apart from the problem of poverty which is mainly due to an inadequate agricultural production, the District is facing problems linked to ignorance; to lack of sources of drinking water which are close to the population; to an inadequate number of schools; to the presence of many people in need as the District was particularly affected by genocide, to the problem of lack of road infrastructures and health centres , (out of 14 sectors, 4 do not have health centres), to the problem of lack of electric power which isolates the District
